Transparency in the Catholic Church in the face of the St. Michael’s College School incident

November 23, 2018 – A prestigious, all-boys private Catholic school in Toronto has come under fire for a tragic hazing incident involving six of its students – all of whom have been charged in connection to an alleged gang sexual assault on a student. The six boys have been released on bail, the victim is being protected by police and the school. Toronto Police spokesperson, Meahan Gray said that they are now, “investigating new reports that have come to police attention since Monday.”

The Administration of St. Michael’s College School came under attack for not immediately reporting the alleged gang sex assault to police, even though they had video of the abhorrent attack. In a stunning turn of events last night, St. Michael’s College School principal Greg Reeves and president of the board, Father Jefferson Thompson resigned. The board of directors say the resignations will, “move the school forward without distractions and allow it to focus on healing and change after the horrific events.”

In a press conference, Toronto Police inspector, Dominic Sinopoli said, “there were more than 50 witnesses to the alleged gang sex assault,” and left open the possibility of child pornography charges for anyone distributing or possessing the video on social media channels. Inspector Sinopoli also said he believes police will uncover, “more in the coming days.”
